INGREDIENTS

  • 2 Tbsp Olive oil or vegetable oil
  • ½ med Onion finely minced
  • 2 Tbsp Minced garlic
  • 1- 36oz Bottled Ketchup
  • ¼ C A-1 Steak Sauce
  • 3 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ¼ C Teriaki Sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Liquid smoke
  • 1 tsp Chili powder
  • 1 tsp Ground cumin
  • 1 tsp Garlic salt
  • ½ C Brown sugar
  • ½ tsp Ground red pepper (or 1 tsp flakes)
  • Fresh Ground Pepper to taste
  • 4 Tbsp Butter (added at end)

DIRECTIONS

In a medium sized sauce pan, on medium heat, saute onion and garlic in the olive oil. Add in all other ingredients except for butter.

Allow the sauce to get hot and bubbly, stirring occasionally.

Turn sauce to low and let simmer for at least 1 hour (longer is better)

Remove sauce from heat, stir in butter.

Note: you add the butter last, else the sauce will "break" when you get it hot and bubbly.

Also: I usually take the ketsup bottle, rinse it out and then funnel back in the bbq sauce after it has cooled. This makes it easier later when bbq'ing, just squirt it on, no messy brushes!

RECIPE BACKSTORY

Growing up, I remember my dad making the very best bbq sauce. I lost him when I was just 23 and thought the recipe had gone with him. It took years of practice but I think I finally got it. My best cooking triumph was when my brothers came over for a cookout and said that it was exactly like they remembered. I was then determined to write it down to pass on to my children. Hope you enjoy it as much as my family has.

Actually the sauce was used for "pulled chicken" in a crock pot. My son who is away at college went to an Australian Restaurant and had mac and cheese with pulled bbq chicken on top and he asked if I could try and duplicate it. He said it would have been delicious if their BBQ sauce was better. I've had stranger request , But hey I'm game !! I made it and had all the kids over he was home for the weekend, by the way there are 6 kids and girlfriends and boyfriends and 1 grandbaby so there was quite a bit of commotion to say the least. we had loads of fun and for ALL the hard work I put into everything, what was completely gone at the end of the day was the pulled bbq chicken. LOL I wouldn't change it for anything ...
